Chapter 5 — Faith for Generations
THE HOME THAT HOUSED A CHURCH
The home that housed the church

Wie Wie and Seck Chuan

The early days of our church were marked by frequent relocations. Due to a lack of suitable locations, our home became a hub for church activities.

Worship notes on the wall

Back then, we wrote worship songs on paper and stuck them on the wall. Our wall soon became covered in Blu Tack and the paint peeled away. The aftermath of hosting was often chaotic, particularly when meetings ran late and we cleaned up by ourselves.

As first registrar, we'd chair meetings, create weekly brochures, and oversee discipleship programmes. We also took care of the flock and visitors as leaders.

Serving at such a capacity while navigating the complexities of career, relationships, family, and marriage was a challenge that often required us to rely on improvisation and faith. Yet, God remained a constant source of comfort. During our time of serving, God showed up through Bible verses, prayers, and meaningful communion with believers.

As we remained faithful and trusted in the Great Commission, our childlike faith became a cornerstone of our community. We obeyed God's guidance, which led to remarkable growth and expansion.

Through all these years, one thing we deeply appreciate and sincerely hope will always stay, is the personal touch – whether the church is big or small, then or now. In seasons of joy and in times of challenge, we are never alone. There are always prayers and support from our Life Group members and leaders, and we continue to trust in God as our source of spiritual and mental strength.

The first Hope church camp

Did You Know?

The first Hope church camp was held in Wie Wie & Seck Chuan’s house!

if i can,
WHY NOT?
Esther

My parents are some of the most hospitable people I know. Our home was always open to the church. My mom would singlehandedly cook for more than 20 people while my dad would help clean. Once, 100 youths stayed over at my house for camp. People were lying down in the living room, the kitchen; even the stairs!

As I watched my parents serve, I grew up with this mindset: If I can, why not? Whether it is offering my space, time, or abilities to meet a need or bless others, I want to serve in whatever capacity I have.

My first serving experience was acting in a HopeKids skit. At 13, I became a mentor and part of my Life Group's core team. At 14, I rose up to lead a LG. Once, I headed home around 10pm, still in my school uniform. Police officers escorted me home because they were worried about me being out so late. Thankfully, my parents always remained supportive of me serving!

The way I serve today has evolved. Whether it was returning to youth, serving in Stories ministry, or journeying with people, my heart has remained the same – to meet the needs of God's church.

I have always felt blessed to be born into a Christian family. I am thankful that God came into my life even before I knew I needed Him, and seeing firsthand how my parents love God has given me a firm foundation for my faith today.
