I served as part of the worship team when it was at Kreta Ayer People's Theatre in 1995.
KAPT was a Chinese Opera Theatre, so we would occasionally find opera props lying around. Some days, there were Chinese junk ships on stage. Other days there would be 3-metre Chinese ritual figures hanging from the ceiling. Yet services would still take place.
We all chipped in to prepare for service every Sunday morning. Life Groups took turns to clean the toilets. The worship team would be up by 5am to transport instruments and equipment.
After setting up the stage, we would change out of our “lok kok” clothes into nice stage clothes to serve. The church did not have much money, so we would pay for instruments using our own means. After service, we would tear down and do street evangelism after lunch. Sometimes we would also support evening services at Stanley Street, and only went home at 12am.
Occasionally, KAPT would have their own booking so we had to find other venues. Once, we even had an outdoor service at Little Guilin Quarry. Despite not having a proper location, we didn't think much. We just turned up and met the needs of the church wherever we went, and God used that to build His church.
Looking back, I have no regrets! I'm glad that I could contribute to the building of the church. My reward is in heaven, and that's something worth investing in!
